5-29 Siracusa to Modica to Ragusa Shopping, Chocolate and Festival of St. George

This morning began with a little surprise happy birthday song as I walked into breakfast. What a kick! Then we were off for a bus ride to the town of Modica. We browsed around for a while, and then met up with the group for lunch. At the end of the lunch I was treated to a dessert with candle. I must say, a great way to celebrate my birthday.

We went next to a chocolate lab to see how they make the special chocolate here, with the added opportunity to purchase some at the end (wink – wink!). Very delicious chocolate, and several of the bars have found their way into my suitcase.

We arrived in Ragusa with enough time to check into the hotel and then make our way (walking up – up hill!) to the church. Today is the feast of St. Michael and the celebration is huge. The statue of St. George killing the dragon is carried down the umpteen steps of the church, and then carried on a platform down the street. It is eventually placed on a special car/flatbed and driven around town at 2 miles and hour. All the townspeople come out to participate. There are fireworks, light decorations and light projections around the square where the church is located. Along with the statue an ornate silver reliquary (the Arca Santa) is also paraded through the streets. The whole thing is accompanied by a marching band, priests, altar boys and citizens.

Lovely dinner following the festivities with a family that is also on the tour.
