5-30 Saturday Ceramics, Mosaics and a drive to the coast

Our morning began with arrival in Caltagirone, a town known for ceramics. Their claim to fame are the decorated steps which connect the old town to the new town, Beautiful tile work and decorated with flowers!

We shopped around and I managed to only purchase one small dish as a memento. Rather proud of myself!

Next: we had lunch at a charming patio restaurant in Piazza Armerina. Good company, beautiful property and a good bathroom!

The afternoon was quite warm weather while we toured the Villa del Casale; 43,055 square feet of ancient mosaic tile floors! The 4th century Roman villa was uncovered in the 1950’s and is a UNESCO site of great importance.  The amount of work on these tile floors is amazing and intricate. The preservation is fabulous. The designs

on the tile floors give an idea of what the room was actually used for. Truly a long tour and a lot of information to absorb. I will only post a few of the 50 photos I took!

Following the tour, we had a 2 hour bus ride to our hotel by the sea. Hotel Luna Minoica is built on a hill, and they do have golf carts to take us up to our rooms. We are here for 3 nights, so we hope the golf cart service works well!
