Our plan to see St. Peter's Basilica was thwarted by rain and about 10,000 people! We finally arrived at St. Peter's square through heavy traffic, made our way through security checks and throngs of people. There was a special Indian ceremony going on in the square which most likely added to the crowd size. (Indian, as in: American Indians - don't know what tribe. All dressed in white, drums beating and doing traditional dances. Really lovely) We managed to find the handicap access area. It was closed!! There were people waiting in line, peeps in wheelchairs, and no personnel to tell you what was going on. THEN, it started to rain. Fancy electric wheelchairs and rain do not mix well... so we finally bailed. As we made our way out, we were told by a security guard that they would be opening soon ... they had to wait for the Pope to leave. Who knew? Sadly, our patience had ended, and we will need to see the Basilica the next time we are in Rome. So: just a few photos of the square. Tomorrow we drive to the port and board the ship.
