A wonderful tour of the Jewish Ghetto along with the museum and the Great Synagogue. There is so much history about the lives of the Italian jews. Our tour guide comes from a Jewish family that has lived in Rome for hundreds of years. The Jewish population of Italy is only around 40.000 these days, but it is a very active community.

We toured the museum which has amazing textiles and a beautiful collection of Torah covers and finials as well as other artifacts.

We also walked through the streets of the old Ghetto and could see how narrow they were and how everyone was crammed together in this 4-square block area. Note the photo showing how narrow the streets were. There was a re-do of the area in the early 1900's so now most of the streets have more light between the buildings.

The holiday of Sukkot has begun, so we had a moment to enjopy sitting in the Sukkah. Then a chance to appreciate the beauty of the Great Synagogue. And: a photo with Howard up near the bema ... always an achievement! We finished the tour with lunch on the main street of the Ghetto ... good food and very busy.
