We had a lovely tour of this little town in Sicily. The town was established in the 4th century BC. As we drove there from the port of Messina, the landscape was filled with lemon trees and prickly pear cactus. Almost everything in the shops has some form of lemon motif.
In the Cathedral Square of the city we saw the church and then the lovely balconies on the buildings all around. At the corners of one of the balconies were pinecones. These are also prevalent as a symbol of prosperity and good luck. On the facade of the city hall there are Jewish Stars worked into the design. These were added as a reminder that the Jewish Quarter was once in this area, behind the Cathedral.
The ancient highlight of the town (aside from the main pedestrian street lined with high end shops) are the Hellenistic walls and the 3rd century, BC Greek and Roman amphitheater. The amphitheater held up to 5000 spectators, and is quite impressive.
