Our port was Heraklion, Greece on the island of Crete with a tour to see the Palace at Knossos. For those not steeped in Greek history here is a short summary: the Palace at Knossos was occupied by many kings; the most famous was King Minos. The complex dates back to  2000-1580 BCE. The palace is a huge archaeological site covering 22,000 square meters. The first palace was destroyed by earthquake and then rebuilt to the huge excavated site we see today. Amazingly, some areas are fairly intact and some of the frescoes have survived. It was really interesting to learn something about the Minoans who were Europe’s earliest recorded civilization.
